Rainier.  It was early summer, with blue skies and mild temperatures, making for perfect conditions to hike in the forests of the Cascade Mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<center><iframe src='https:\/\/www.gaiagps.com\/public\/PjjZ4MwhgqsltB5ghR0LE70q?embed=True' style='border:none; overflow-y: hidden; background-color:white; min-width: 320px; max-width:600px; width:100%; height: 420px;' scrolling='no' seamless='seamless'><\/iframe><\/center>\n\n\n\n<center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fKIDaBmGBZY\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/center>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">The hike started at the Teeley Creek trailhead, accessible after driving a few miles up a gravel forest service road, to the south of the Nisqually River. A small size parking area exists at the trailhead, with views of Mount Rainier available before the hike even begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gravelbound.com\/?attachment_id=2123\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/gravelbound.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Teeley_Creek_Trailhead.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2123\" width=\"427\" height=\"600\"\/><\/a><figcaption>View from the Teeley Creek Trailhead<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Not long after starting the hike down trail #251, I was soon greeted with even wider views of Mount Rainier, hiding behind the trees. The prominence of this majestic stratovolcano is hard to take in, reaching above 14,000 feet in elevation, only a few miles across the Nisqually River valley. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gravelbound.com\/?attachment_id=2124\"><img src=\"http:\/\/gravelbound.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Sneaky_views_of_Mount_Rainier.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2124\" width=\"650\"\/><\/a><figcaption>A wide view of Mount Rainier seen from the Teeley Creek Trail<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Soon, I arrived at Pothole Lake, the lower of the three mountain lakes I will be hiking too today. Some of these giant hemlock trees have stood here watching Mount Rainier for 100s of years. Here in the Sawtooth Area of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest is s an abundance of serene and peaceful mountain scenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gravelbound.com\/?attachment_id=2128\"><img src=\"http:\/\/gravelbound.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Forested_Trail_on_the_Teeley_Creek_Hike.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2128\" width=\"650\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Deep forest environment on the Teeley Creek Trail<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">The trail to the next lake involved a few 100 feet of elevation gain, so I cinched up my backup, deployed my hiking pole and made my way up the trail. Before long I arrived at the middle lake on the hike, Bertha May Lake, situated at 4055 ft. elevation. Large exposed granite crags extend above the treed shoreline at Bertha May Lake, with small patches of snow still melting in the shadowed valleys of the terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gravelbound.com\/?attachment_id=2132\"><img src=\"http:\/\/gravelbound.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Rock_Outcrops_abvoe_Bertha_May_Lake.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2132\" width=\"650\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Rock Outcrops above Bertha May Lake<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">After relaxing at Bertha May lake for a while, I packed up and continued on up the trail to the next destination, Granite Lake. Along the trail to Granite Lake was a cool old gnarled tree that had long ago died, it&#8217;s bark fallen off, and the remaining wood slowly decaying. Along the trail at Granite Lake is an excellent dispersed campsite situated just above the lakeshore, with log benches situated around one of the most scenic campfire rings I have ever seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gravelbound.com\/?attachment_id=2140\"><img src=\"http:\/\/gravelbound.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Camping_Area_at_Granite_Lake.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2140\" height=\"600\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Granite Lake was quite the impressive mountain lake, with a large extent of open water and easily accessible shoreline, providing for a sweeping panoramic view of the granite rock prominences along the skyline at this lake. This would be a truly stunning place to make camp for a few nights on an overnight backpacking trip. It would be dream to photograph this place on a dark night, capturing a time-lapse view as the sky filled with stars.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gravelbound.com\/?attachment_id=2142\"><img src=\"http:\/\/gravelbound.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Pano_at_Granite_Lake_in_the_Gifford_Pinchot_National_Forest.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2142\" width=\"650\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Panoramic view of the rock outcroppings from the shores of Granite Lake<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Before heading back down the trail, I did a little looking around near Granite Lake, hoping for a better view of the volcano. It was not first obvious, but there was indeed an unobstructed view to be had of Mount Rainier, standing tall in the not so far distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gravelbound.com\/?attachment_id=2144\"><img src=\"http:\/\/gravelbound.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Mount_Rainier_with_Rocky_Slopes.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2144\" width=\"650\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Rocky slopes and glacier filled valleys on Mount Rainier<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Overall Granite Lake was my favorite of the three lakes, and well worth the hike to the end of the Teeley Creek Trail. The most magnificent rock outcroppings were at Granite Lake, and it was the only lake side camping area with easy views of Mount Rainier.
